The wave and the mountain
Quiksilver is one of the great surf brands that manufactures hard material and surf, skate and snow clothing. Created in 1970 by two surfing friends in Newquay, Australia, it began its journey with the making of swimsuits. A few months later they launched themselves into the wetsuit pool and arrived with important innovations for the time, such as velcro closures or quick drying. The resistance and the characteristics that contributed to these new ranges of wetsuits made them famous in the area, impressing the surfers and spreading the voice of a new brand that had arrived to stay.
Kelly Slater and female surfing
In the mid-1980s, Quiksilver was already present throughout Australia, the USA and Europe with collections of wetsuits, skateboards and snow as well as clothes that reflected the alternative and adventurous lifestyle of its users. The big ‘boom’ came in 1991 when Quiksilver in his sports sponsorship policy decided to sign Florida youth Kelly Slater for his team. The enormous talent of the 11-time world champion in surfing and his participation in the famous series ‘Baywatch’ made him a media star. Everyone wanted to wear one of the shirts Kelly wore in her surfing videos after getting out of the water.
The growth of the brand was such that, it decided to be the first surf company to bet on female surfing and created Roxy (*), products for women who love surfing and the outdoor lifestyle in general.
Managers and surf professionals
Many of the current managers of Quiksilver are former professional surfers. The brand believes that its success lies in that; Big decisions are always made by people who catch waves. Its policy of sponsoring athletes who as young people reached the height of legends such as Kelly Slater or Tony Hawk, and support for multiple world championships such as the prestigious Eddie Aikau, have managed to raise the object of desire that many athletes and lovers of a Adventure lifestyle come in every piece of clothing or surf suit that you buy from Quiksilver.
